There are so many business directories on the world wide web. These directories are not built equal. Some are more important and valuable than others. Some are useless. But with so many options, how do you identify good directories to list your business on and have a good Return on Investment (ROI) for your business long term.

Well, there are two main reasons to list your company on business directories. The first reason is to get potential clients to your website or to get your potential clients to contact you. The second reason is to get dofollow backlinks that help increase your website rankings on Google and other search engines.

Some business directories are good for the first reason, some business directories are good for the second reason, some business directories cater to both reasons and there are many that cater to none of the two reasons above.

Our focus when looking for good business directories should be to find and get listed on any directory that caters to at least one of the reasons mentioned above.

Now that you have somewhat of an idea of the types of business directories, I will go ahead and share with you the top 3 business directories in South Africa any business must be listed on.

Warning: This is just the top 3 list for most types of businesses. There are still other great industry-specific business directories you should search for and list your business on. Please make sure to find those too and list your company there too.

1. Google My Business

Google My Business allows you to create a free listing for your business on Google – the biggest search engine in the world including here in South Africa. When a consumer researches your business on Google — or even searches for services related to your business — you want to ensure that your company appears and that your potential clients have all the information they need to visit your website and/or contact your company.

There is no valid reason to not list your company on Google My Business. Look, if you want free leads and you want free traffic directly from Google, sign up and properly optimize your business profile on Google My Business.

2. Alikah

Alikah is a free business social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos, send messages, list businesses, advertise and keep in touch with friends and business colleagues. And like with most business directories above, you can list your business there.

But don’t expect to generate any leads or traffic to your website. Rather, when your website is listed on their website, it gives you another dofollow backlink to your website from yet another higher authority website signaling to search engines the value of your website.

3. Rate It All

Rate It All is a client review and business directory website. Rate It All provides a quick way to get feedback and respond to your customers. But, while I recommend you definitely list your business there, the value of this business directory is to get another dofollow backlink to your website from yet another higher authority website signaling to search engines the value of your website.

But if you want to get reviews from your clients, get those reviews using Google My Business or in video form but not through Rate It All.

And that concludes the list of the top 3 free business directories you should submit your website to. Above and beyond the business directories listed on this page, you are welcome to search for more business directories that fit your type of business and also list your business there.

The only thing left, if you haven’t done it already, is to implement what you’ve learned in this article. And remember, it does not matter what you know but what you do. #StartDoing
